The 20-Micron Margin: What Quality Control Actually Means at a Dental Lab
Every dental lab says it cares about quality. Here's what that actually looks like in practice, case by case, at AIM.
The margin that matters
Our ceramics team once produced a beautiful full-contour zirconia three-unit bridge — well-shaped, well-shaded, ready to ship. Under our high-powered microscope during final QC, we found a marginal gap 20 microns larger than our tolerance allows. Twenty microns is roughly a quarter the width of a human hair — completely invisible to the naked eye, and to most patients, probably unnoticeable for years.
We made a new one from scratch anyway.
That's not a marketing anecdote. It's the actual standard every case is held to before it leaves the building, and it's why four things happen on every case, without exception:
1. High-powered microscopy on every case
Every restoration is examined under magnification before it leaves the lab — not spot-checked, every one. Marginal gaps, surface defects, and shade inconsistencies get caught at the bench, not after a doctor calls back.
2. 360° peer review
Our artisans regularly compare their own work against competitor cases and internal benchmarks in structured review sessions. It's less about catching mistakes after the fact and more about keeping the whole team's baseline moving up over time.
3. An impression quality gate at intake
Every incoming case is checked before any work begins. Incomplete impressions or missing shade information get flagged immediately, and the doctor's office gets a call the same day — not a delivery delay two weeks later with no explanation.
4. Continuous education
Technique doesn't stand still, and neither do we. Regular company-wide training and cross-department feedback loops keep the team current as materials and workflows evolve.
Why this matters for your practice
None of this shows up on an invoice. What it means in practice is fewer remakes, fewer chairside adjustments, and fewer awkward conversations with a patient about why a crown doesn't quite seat right. A restoration that passes a 20-micron check the first time is one your team doesn't have to think about twice.
If you'd like to see how our QC process handles a specific case type, schedule a pickup or give us a call — we're happy to walk through it.
